Canarywarfthroughwreckage

I took the tube to Canary Wharf (station is under that tall building in the centre in the background) and walked east (towards the right and away from the river) and through the interior of the Isle of Dogs which is a penninsula created by deposits of the meandering Thames. In earlier times man built passage canals for huge ocean going boats brought ships safely into a huge internal harbour where they were unloaded and their cargos stored. You'd think there would be lots of interesting relics but the massive conversion of the Isle of Dogs to a middle class suburban community for Canary Wharf workers has eliminated most traces. From the east coast of the penninsula I walked along the coast down to Mudchute (from right to left in the image but Mudchute is another 20 mins down the coast). From Mudchute I walked under the Thames to Greenwich via the walking tunnel and then headed back the same way I had come but on the south side of the river heading towards North Greenwich.

It's a fun walk... even despite the denuding of the past from the current landscape on the north side of the river. The walk under the river is great and I've written about the Thames Path to the Dome in North Greenwich before but I just find it astonishing, an amazing anomoly or oversight in our over protective society. The Thames Path goes right through heavy industrial landscapes for a mile or two with little or no regard for the protection of strollers.

At one point you stand directly under a fire 40 feet up in the air gushing from a pipe connected to industrial silos. At another point a giant crane had to stop unloading a barge full of aggregate (I could have jumped into it) to let me pass as the crane had to swing its cargo over the Thames Path each time to dump its load 20 feet in on shore. No buzzers, warning signs, gates or anything. Right on the waters' edge, bulldozers plowing aggregate hither and yon and you standing on the Thames Path in the middle of it all with Canary Wharf in the background gleaming like the city of Oz. Only the Stratford Marsh compares in otherworldliness.

Definately recommended!
