Curiously Incongruous

The 1950's social theorists known as the Situationist International coined the term psychogeography for their interest in the psychological dimensions of urban geography.

To study the relationship between the physical geography of an urban landscape and the psychological experience of it the Situationists developed a technique they termed dérive (drift). In "Theory of Dérive" Guy Debord, a leading SI theorist explained:

“In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there."

Since April 2004 I've walked thousands upon thousands of miles through the streets of every part of London taking photographs.

Curiously incongruous is my journal of the images which most interested me on the day. As such, be prepared for a certain unevenness in quality.

There are now over 5000 images on the site, almost all of which are indexed (below) to the area of the city in which they were shot, it's a uniquely comprehensive if somewhat idiosyncratic photographic panorama of London.

Below those you’ll find a list of the sections of London in which the images were shot Click on an area and you'll see the images from that area. Finally, you'll find themed Photo Albums which are either my earliest images of London not indexed by neighbourhood or they're recent images but of slightly off topic locations outside of London as labelled.
