I was walking home along the Thames, weak, my first venture outside after a horrid 36 hours of stomach flu or food poisoning, my photographic muse nowhere to be found. I was a bit frustrated and thinking of Joel Meyerowitz who I heard a few days ago lecture at Tate Modern about his photographic history and how he and Gary Winogrand would day after day shoot these fabulous images (slides shown). When there in front of me was Joel Meyerowitz and his wife Magggie Barret. Tugged between walking on or putting myself in the groveling position of a gushing groupie I flung humility to the wind and walked up to him and said, "Joel, I'm really sorry to bother you but I want to tell you how much I liked your talk the other night, you had me in the palm of your hand. The phrase seemed to amuse him and also, he has a sweetness and humbleness about him and he seemed grateful somehow.
And he said, "come on and walk with us a bit" First, we talked of several non-photographic issues, the same kind of small talk you might make with your father's boss at the company. It turned out that Maggie lived a long time in Woodstock (NY) as I did and she named off all kinds of places she remembered which I didn't but my memories of America are as rotted and derelict as what you often see in my images. As we neared the restaurant where they were to meet friends I felt I had to ask Joel for some tidbit of photographic something to carry away and I said
how much would you be shooting now if you were shooting and he said, oh, pretty often, if we weren't meeting people we'd just be walking along slowly and taking photos, and I said, like what, people oriented stuff or landscape? and he said, yes, you know, the light, the way the air feels, that its our last evening in London, something that invites my eye, whatever grabs me, you have to make yourself open to your surroundings and then, whatever grabs you...
